Harper Announces Reelection Bid

State Representative Alan Harper announced today his reelection bid for the Alabama House of Representatives District 61 seat. He was elected in 2006 by a margin of almost 70 percent to represent Northport, West Tuscaloosa County and Pickens County.

“My pledge in 2006 was to support education, jobs, our seniors, the armed forces, public safety and highway projects in a common sense, conservative manner. I worked to do exactly what I said. Our 2010 pledge is to continue the work!” Harper said. “I am appreciative and honored to serve our citizens in Montgomery.”

Harper noted his support of schools and libraries with funds for equipment, supplies and capital improvements. His support of business legislation and incentives has helped create jobs throughout Alabama during tough economic times. “We have pushed for the completion of Highways 43, 82 and 17 and we are working to initiate improvements to Highway 69. Highway projects are safety projects!” he said. He also was instrumental in securing funds for the Heritage Learning Center in downtown Northport and for public project work on the Northwood Lake dam as well as other projects of significance in Pickens County. “These are key projects that mean a lot to our citizens.”

When asked about other legislative accomplishments during the last four years, Harper proudly spoke of passing the Alabama Senior Citizen’s Hall of Fame legislation; the Alabama Military Support Act; and working for the mental health community in West Alabama. “It is humbling to work for our seniors, veterans and our mental health consumers. These good folks deserve everything we can help them with,” Harper said.

Harper serves as vice chairman of the Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives. This committee oversees all business and commerce related legislation. He also is a member of the Agriculture and Forestry Committee and has several other key appointments to other boards and commissions.

The primary election will be held June 1, 2010. Harper is seeking reelection for the Democratic nomination for District 61.
